This August, Nomadhut (Me) will be hosting a series of collaborative tile-painting workshops in London as part of the ongoing fit-out of our Tenerife coliving space.
Participants will each create a hand-painted ceramic tile using a limited cobalt-blue palette inspired by traditional Mediterranean and Portuguese azulejos. The finished tiles will then be permanently installed as part of a bathroom interior within the space (or you can keep your tile).
The project is an experiment in participatory architecture — exploring how transient communities can leave lasting physical traces inside the places they temporarily inhabit.
Rather than commissioning decorative elements anonymously, we wanted to create something with visible human involvement: small imperfections, personal symbols, patterns, and stories embedded directly into the building itself.
The workshops will take place at This Way UP in Bermondsey and are open to founders, creatives, makers, remote workers, artists, and friends of the community.
No previous art experience is required.
Participants will be provided with:
- blank ceramic tiles
- cobalt underglaze paints
- reference materials and inspiration
- refreshments and music
The final installation in Tenerife will combine individually painted tiles with more traditional field tiles to create a cohesive cobalt-blue interior inspired by Atlantic coastal architecture.
Years from now, guests staying at Nomadhut may encounter one of these tiles without knowing who made it — a small physical reminder that places can be shaped collectively, over time, by the people who pass through them.

I’ve got 2 bathrooms (well shower rooms / cupboards, probably over selling the space I’m dealing with… lol), so I’m thinking we might be able to adapt the idea if there is enough interest.
