Big News from Bajamar: We Got the Green Light!
I can finally say it: we have full planning permission — and the licence to start work has officially arrived. After months of back and forth, site visits, paperwork, and some nervous waiting, I’ve got the document in hand. That means construction starts now.
For those of you following along, you’ll know this building has a story. It was a garage. Then a supermarket. Then a pizzeria. And then… nothing, for over 15 years. It sat empty, gathering dust just a few minutes from the Atlantic, in a quiet corner of Bajamar. But now, it’s about to become something new — a home, a shared space, and the seed of something much bigger.
Getting this far wasn’t a given. Parking requirements, zoning questions, and the strange dance of Spanish bureaucracy made sure of that. But the response to the pre-application was positive, and when the residents’ association voted unanimously in favour of the change of use, I knew we had a shot. Today, it’s real.
So what’s next? Renovations begin immediately. The space will be transformed into a ground-floor loft-style apartment — high ceilings, natural light, and an open, creative vibe. This is more than just a personal project. It’s the first step in creating a coliving network rooted in affordability, community, and adaptability.
The goal is to offer not just a place to stay, but a place to build, reflect, and connect — especially for creatives and founders who need a base that won’t drain their runway. This first unit will also host an artist residency, inviting people to come live, create, and contribute to the space and surrounding community.
Planning / Construction tax paid 1,477… Thanks Dad (RIP), still helping me along. I’m hopeful the £10k will get me partly through the electrics and adding some of the windows (not sure paying a tax bill was the kind of thing you’d have wanted me to spend it on, but hey). I miss you so much.
I’ll be documenting the build, the design decisions, and the small wins (and inevitable hiccups) along the way. If you’ve ever dreamed about converting an old space into something meaningful — or starting your own project in the Canaries — follow along. This journey is just getting started.
More soon,
Lots of love,
Happy days,
Ben
