I live off-grid on a boat called Hereward the Wake, it’s 43ft long, some of which is outside space so it’s a bit like living in a 30ft shipping container. What did I do before this randomness… (Pre-COVID19)
In order to keep costs to a minimum I don’t have a mooring, this means I am a bit ‘nomadic’, and therefore I have to move the boat every two weeks.
I produce 100% of my electricity from the solar panels I installed on the roof (I’m a qualified / certified boat electrician… but I wouldn’t trust me to do your electrics!). I don’t run the engine or a generator for power at any point in the year!
The boat is a bit of a project / work in progress, but for c£20k it was a relative bargain in October 2020, as during lockdown I needed somewhere to live… I’d lost my home and the company I’d spent a decade building up as a result of repeated lockdowns during the COVID-19 Pandemic…
I have another boat, 1981 Catalac Catamaran… another doer-upper / project… I aim to sail to Tenerife to keep my carbon footprint down. She’d been left alone on hard standing for over a decade, there’s a lot for me to do. UPDATE: I had to sell the catamaran to fund the fitout, life isn’t always easy and nice choices.
oh and a pedalo… don’t ask, I have an issue with ebay…
There are two other modes of transport in my life, my bike (inc trailer)…
…and ‘Dicke Bertha’ a 1970 Mercedes 408 German fire engine, soon to be ‘wood-fired pizza oven’ food truck. UPDATE: a slight pivot has occured, it’s now Chilli Billi
